The ACLU of South Dakota is pleased to welcome the nation's leading expert in American Indian sexuality studies, Wesley K. Thomas, Ph.D., for a discussion about Two Spirits on Saturday, December 17th, in Rapid City.

Dr. Thomas is renowned for his research on American Indian studies, especially in terms of sexual identity. Two Spirits is a term describing the traditional role of LGBT tribal people, and Wesley, who identifies as Two Spirit, teaches and consults on gender and sexuality issues nationwide. ACLU staff will also discuss upcoming legislation regarding LGBT equality and anti-bullying.

Dr. Thomas is featured in the documentary film, Two Spirits, which will be shown prior to Thomas' presentation. Food and beverage will be available buffet-style during the event. The film, food, and discussion are FREE. We ask all attendees to bring non-perishable food/personal care items or 0-18 youth toys/clothing to donate to area charities in honor of the giving season. Attendees who bring donations will be entered into one of several drawings to win a copy of the "Two Spirits" DVD.

We hope you will join us for this lively discussion on December 17th.

Join women and men from across the state as we make our voices heard on issues that impact women every day, such as reproductive rights, violence against women, equal opportunity for women and education. There will be FREE bus transportation to Pierre from Sioux Falls, Brookings and Rapid City. The day will include a lunch program at the Capitol Visitors' Center, an announcement of acknowledgment from the galleries and a legislative reception at View 34.

38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade
January 22, 2011 marks the 38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. In coalition with NARAL Pro Choice South Dakota and Planned Parenthood MN, SD and ND, the ACLU of South Dakota will present a panel discussion on the history and significance of Roe from legal, religious, pre-Roe, and post-Roe perspectives. The event, held 4:30-6:00pm, will include a traditional "Afternoon Tea" service, and we hope our guests will add to this commemorative event by wearing their best garden party or derby hats. (We're serious about the hats, folks. There might even be a prize for the best hat.)

We hope you will take this opportunity to remember Roe in 2011. For more information or to RSVP, please email Sam at info@roesd.org. This event will include a free will donation rather than a ticket charge, but we ask that you RSVP in advance if at all possible.
