ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Advocacy Manager in the ACLU of South Dakota, a national Chapter of the ACLU. The role is based in our Sioux Falls, SD office. (Sioux Falls, SD preferred, would consider Rapid City, SD).
The ACLU defends civil liberties and civil rights through litigation, legislation, and public education.
Reporting to the Campaigns Director, the Advocacy Manager will develop and manage the Chapter's advocacy work in South Dakota. They will do so primarily via identifying, shaping, and executing advocacy campaigns in the Chapter's priority issue areas. They will work under the direction of the Campaigns Director and will closely collaborate with the Chapter's Communications Department and, to a lesser extent, the Legal Department.
- Develop and execute effective multi-disciplinary advocacy campaigns to advance civil rights/liberties, including a combination of policy, advocacy, legislative, and communication strategies under the direction of the Campaigns Director
- Using issue and policy analysis and research, prepare materials in collaboration with communications staff, including issue briefs, policy letters, reports, white papers, talking points, op-eds, blogs, and more. On occasion, work with communications staff to identify and develop stories of impacted individuals
- Lobby elected officials on state and local policy priorities as identified under the direction of and in consultation with the Campaigns Director
- Prepare and manage ACLU SD statewide advocacy agenda: identify, analyze, and track priority issues in South Dakota that affect civil rights/liberties
- Establish and cultivate collaborative relationships with community partners, coalitions, stakeholders, and key state and local policy-makers
- Identify and develop relationships and leadership opportunities for directly impacted community members in order to accomplish shared goals that align with ACLU SD issue priorities; elevate the experiences of impacted populations to ensure the interests of vision of impacted populations are reflected in campaigns
- Serve as a spokesperson for ACLU SD both with the press and as a professional representative of the organization
- Organize, lead, and participate in community education events, meetings and trainings
- Plan and manage events to raise visibility and support for campaigns and priority issue work
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in political, advocacy, policy, or law related field
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with staff, partners and volunteers from diverse backgrounds, coalitions and community groups
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities and to demonstrate grace under pressure
- Ability to execute a goal-oriented approach that meets objectives and deadlines
- Ability to think creatively and to use policy and advocacy strategies to promote advocacy campaigns
- Personal initiative and the ability to follow through with minimal direct supervision
- Knowledge of the South Dakota political landscape or the ability to get up to speed quickly
- Ability to research, understand, and communicate about complex policy and legal issues and to use that research to drive advocacy efforts without significant assistance from legal staff
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours and commute to meetings and events throughout the state as needed as well as to attend national and regional ACLU trainings and staff conferences; additional travel is anticipated to the state capitol in Pierre during the legislative session up to 40%
- Poised with a sense of humor and ability to maintain balance and perspective,
- Proactive and adept with key tools in advocacy and policy change, understanding of the political landscape, and the ability to work effectively across the political spectrum and on issues that require bi-partisan support
- Strong sense of accountability to both internal teams and external partners in the community
- Strong interpersonal skills including an ability to resolve conflicts in a manner that respect relationships with colleagues and community partners
- Works collaboratively and shares responsibility and credit. Prioritizes a team approach and collaborative decision making across departments
The annual salary for this position is $81,662 (Level G). This salary is reflective of a position based in Sioux Falls, SD. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
