UPDATE: House Bill 1177 was signed into law on March 20.

Description:

House Bill 1177 would require the performance of an ultrasound prior to an abortion.

ACLU position:

The ACLU of South Dakota opposes HB 1177. The decision to have an abortion is incredibly personal and private and best left to a woman, their family and their doctor. The intent of this bill is clear, and it's not to improve the health and well-being of South Dakota women. It is to coerce and intimidate them into not having an abortion.

The ACLU of South Dakota works to ensure that every woman can make the best decision for herself and her family about whether and when to start a family without undue political interference.
