UPDATE: House Bill 1051 has passed both chambers and has been sent to the governor.
House Bill 1051 or the “born alive” bill, would require physicians to provide medical care to any aborted fetus which meets this definition and impose civil and disciplinary action for any physician who does not provide the aforementioned medical care.
We oppose House Bill 1051. These bills unnecessarily place politicians between a person and their doctor. If this bill becomes law, obstetricians and pediatricians would be forced to deviate from their best medical judgment and administer futile and painful treatment against the wishes of the parents, under the threat of civil litigation. Numerous health care organizations, representing thousands of clinicians, oppose these bills including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
