Lawmakers on the House Health and Services Committee will vote on House Bill 1242 on Feb. 22.

The ACLU of South Dakota opposes House Bill 1242.

This bill opens the door for medical practitioners discrimimate against their patients by denying them essential health care because of their own personal beliefs. This bill is extremely broad and could have implications for everything from abortion care to gender-affirming care to vaccinations and more. It would also disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous and other people of color, LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit people, religious minorities, and other marginalized South Dakotans.
