UPDATE: The Senate State Affairs Committee voted to kill Senate Bill 89.
Senate Bill 89 would add Juneteenth as a state holiday in South Dakota.
We support Senate Bill 89 because it will allow South Dakotans to observe Juneteenth as an official state holiday. Juneteenth is an important day in our Nation's history that commemorates the anniversary of the day the last remaining enslaved Black people were emancipated. Juneteenth is a day for celebrating Black liberation, educating people about Black history, and calling on your community to fight the continued oppression of Black people in America.
