UPDATE: Senate Bill 90 was defeated in committee on an 8-1 vote.
Senate Bill 90 is an Act to recognize hair discrimination as an unfair or discriminatory practice. Senate Bill 90 would recognize unfair practices around wearing natural hair and protective styles of hair is racial discrimination.
We support Senate Bill 90 because hair texture discrimination is intrinsically a racial justice issue. Black women are 1.5 times more likely than white women to be sent home from work because of their hair and 80% more likely to agree with the statement "I have to change my hair from it's natural state to fit in at the office." Natural hair is professional and any policy that bans race-based hairstyles is racial discrimination.
