UPDATE: The Senate Education Committee voted to table Senate Bill 88.

Description:

Senate Bill 88 could mandate certain school counselors to disclose to a parent any young person's identification as transgender, exploration of gender identity or reference to potential symptoms of gender dysphoria.

ACLU position:

The ACLU opposes Senate Bill 88 as it infringes the rights of privacy of youth and deters young people from seeking support from trusted adults who are intended to be in positions to counsel them. It could also result in forced disclosure of someone's trans or questioning status to a non-affirming parent, which could result in the young person becoming homeless or physically harmed.
