Criminal Justice

The ACLU is dedicated to ensuring that our prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities comply with the Constitution, federal law, and international human rights principles, and to addressing the crisis of over-incarceration today.

Freedom of Expression and Religion

Freedom of speech, the press, association, assembly, and petition: This set of guarantees, protected by the First Amendment, comprises what we refer to as freedom of expression. It is the foundation of a vibrant democracy, and without it, other fundamental rights, like the right to vote, would wither away.

LGBT Rights

Our goal is to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender South Dakotans can live openly without discrimination and enjoy equal rights, personal autonomy, and freedom of expression and association.

Racial Justice

The ACLU aims to preserve and extend constitutionally guaranteed rights to people who have historically been denied their rights on the basis of race.

Reproductive Freedom

The ACLU works to ensure that every woman can make the best decision for herself and her family about whether and when to have a child without undue political interference.
