Senate Bill 139

Background: Senate Bill 139 is an act to revise a provision related to the transportation of an inmate upon discharge from a correctional facility.

Our Stance: The ACLU of South Dakota supports Senate Bill 139.

This legislation would ensure that a correctional facility provides inmates being discharged with either transportation to the county where the inmate resided or the county where the inmate was sentenced, or a location equal in distance. Ensuring transportation for released inmates is critical to reducing recidivism and enabling successful reintegration into society. The ACLU advocates for improved discharge planning and reentry services to support this transition.
