Over the next couple of months, lawmakers will propose and debate hundreds of bills. The decisions they make will have a deep and lasting impact on our state's people and communities.
Yet, over the last few years, issues that matter most to South Dakotans haven't seemed to be a big priority for some of our legislators. This is unacceptable. Our elected leaders should be working to get good things done on our behalf – not stoke the "culture wars" at the expense of our civil rights.
The ACLU of South Dakota's educational, organizing, and lobbying efforts this year will be focused primarily on criminal legal reform, reproductive rights, voting rights, and First Amendment-protected freedoms such as free speech and the freedom of religion. But we can't do it alone.
Here's how you can get involved:
- Take a look at our legislative advocacy resources for all the information you need to communicate proactively with your elected leaders during session.
- Keep an eye on our online Bill Tracker to learn more about proposed bills and follow them through the legislative process.
- Follow the ACLU of South Dakota on social media for regular updates and how you can get involved during the 2026 Legislative Session.
Democracy hinges on robust public debate and civic participation, especially when civil rights and civil liberties are on the line. If you think your voice doesn't matter, think again. There's never been a more important time to speak up. Your voice is your power.
P.S. Register now for our Civil Rights Lobby Day in Pierre on Thursday, February 19!
