On a frosty Monday afternoon in South Dakota, nearly 40 volunteer activists and a handful of partner organizations gathered in our state’s Capitol to advocate for women’s health and reproductive freedom. Attendees filled in committee hearings and put pressure legislators in Pierre to keep their constituents needs in mind. Each volunteer activist was equipped with tips and instilled with a sense of purpose and urgency to act when legislation like Senate Bill 110, a measure that would shame and swindle South Dakota Women seeking safe and legal abortion care, is proposed.

Lobby Days are great way to show your legislators that you’re paying attention. A day of action can be an effective way of changing hearts and minds. But there’s more work to be done! Change isn’t created in one day at the Capitol. We must consistently tune in and show up and make our voices heard.

Tips for putting your advocacy into action:

  1. Track legislation that is important to you
  2. Show up at Legislative Coffees and Cracker Barrels
  3. Contact Your Representatives
  4. Become an ACLU Member

TAKE ACTION: Senate Bill 110 is moving through the legislature quickly and will be heard in the House soon. Contact your representatives and share why you think politicians need to stay out of personal medical decisions that are best made between a woman, her family, and her doctor.
