The ACLU of South Dakota is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works to defend and strengthen the individual rights and liberties guaranteed in the United States and South Dakota Constitutions through lobbying, selective litigation, and public education. In the 2019 South Dakota Legislative Session we will be working on a broad range of issues including free speech, criminal justice, reproductive freedom, immigrants rights, and LGBT rights.

HB 1160: Emergency Declarations

The ACLU of South Dakota opposes this bill. House Bill 1160, in its current form, appears to align protests with hostile military action, and disorderly conduct as reasons to declare an emergency.

HB 1178: Absentee Voting Restrictions

UPDATE: Representatives voted 36-33 Thursday for the bill, the minimum margin required to send it to the Senate. The measure would reduce the absentee voting window from 46 days to 32 days.
