For years, the ACLU has been engaged in election protection efforts, working to ensure easy, fair, and safe access to the ballot box.

This year, that work will be more important than ever – and we need your help.

Will you join our Election Protection Team?

Election observers will play a crucial role in monitoring polling places for issues affecting voters, ensuring there is no voter disenfranchisement, and tracking any problems that can be fixed for future elections. You don’t have to have any specific expertise – we’ll train you! The only requirement is that you’re not a candidate for office and that you’re available for at least a two-hour shift on Tuesday, November 3, during the general election.

How do you become an election observer? Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Watch our election observer training video

Please complete the video by Friday, October 30th.

Step 2: Contact us!

Email [email protected] and let us know that you completed the training video.

Step 3: Sign up for a volunteer timeslot and complete your final training

Once you’ve let us know that you’ve completed the training video, we will send you a form to sign up for an election observer timeslot on Election Day, which is Tuesday, Nov 3. We’ll also send you more information about a final training and where to pick up your election observer vest.

Step 4: Show up to the polls on Election Day!

Arrive at your designated polling location for your volunteering timeslot. Make sure you cast your vote as well! We recommend voting early if possible.

Our democracy works best when all eligible voters can cast their ballots. With your help, we’ll protect every South Dakotan’s right to vote in 2026 and beyond.
