House Bill 1224 does nothing to directly address the issue that is really risking the lives of pregnant patients: South Dakota's abortion ban.

Senate Bill 210 would have repealed more than 45 pages of South Dakota law restricting abortion care in the state, including the “trigger law” that was enacted after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 and made abortion a criminal act in the state.

The ACLU’s educational, organizing and lobbying efforts will be focused primarily on voting rights, free speech and expression, LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit equality, Indigenous sovereignty and justice, and bodily autonomy and abortion rights.

The government has no place inserting themselves between families and their doctors, whether the issue is reproductive care or medically necessary care for transgender youth.

South Dakotans need to know that our legislative body supports our ability to determine our individual and collective futures. We want to get our legislators on the record supporting birth control and contraception.

Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund and the ACLU of South Dakota are encouraging people to come together and take action during the Our Bodies, Our Futures Rally and Community Building Event on July 10.

Abortion will be Banned in South Dakota; Half the States are Expected to Follow

Medication abortion is safe, common and essential health care. South Dakotans deserve the right to make their own personal decisions about their lives and futures without politicians getting in the middle of the doctor-patient relationship.
