As part of its longstanding election protection efforts, the ACLU is training volunteers across South Dakota to serve as election observers. Samantha Chapman, ACLU of South Dakota advocacy manager, will host three in-person trainings as well as a virtual training to prepare volunteer election observers to monitor polling places for issues affecting voters, help identify potential barriers to voting, and document problems that may require attention in future elections.

No prior experience or specialized expertise is required — participants will receive the necessary training. Volunteers must not be candidates for office and must be available to serve at least a two-hour shift on Tuesday, November 3 during the general election.

“With voters facing increased uncertainty around absentee ballots, identification needed at the polls, and voter qualification challenges, election observers will play an important role in helping ensure that eligible South Dakotans can exercise their right to vote,” said Chapman. “By joining the Election Protection Team, volunteers can help safeguard access to the ballot and strengthen the integrity of the electoral process.”
