House Bill 1237 would require school districts to label all books in school libraries with age-appropriate or grade-appropriate rating if the book contain certain "mature" content.

The ACLU of South Dakota opposes House Bill 1237. This bill would place unnecessary burdens on library and school staff who are already deeply under resourced.

House Bill is nothing more than an attempt to ban books and control what content South Dakotans have access to. Just because some lawmakers might not like a book or disagree with its content, doesn’t mean people should be discouraged from accessing it.

If those in power are trying to control your access, they’re trying to scare you.
